| EXPERT TRAVEL ADVICE TO MAKE YOUR TRIPS MORE ENJOYABLE |
| Although traveling always seems exotic and exciting, it is often hard work, particularly if you are traveling alone. When you travel, you are taken out of the comfort zone of your environment. Below are some universal tips for making your trip more enjoyable and more error-free. DON'T FREAK OUT. This is the first and most important rule of travel. Even the most seasoned travelers make mistakes. Accept this as part of your adventure. If you miss the bus or the train, don't panic. There will be another one. If you don't have a hotel for the night, it's not the end of the world. Just remember, there is always a way. The traveler knows this. Panic only complicates your problems. A calm demeanor allows for a clear head and the resolution of your problems. STUDY YOUR MAPS. This doesn't mean you have to memorize the maps. It just means that you need to familiarize yourself with the area. If you have a basic sense of where you are (even if you have never been there before), you have a much better chance of remaining calm when a mishap arises. DRESS THE PART. When traveling, it is important to blend-in. This way you're not viewed as a target by would-be criminals. And, if you're not in a state of panic, you will blend in even better. You need to know which clothes are appropriate for your destination. DON'T TREAT THE GUIDE BOOK LIKE IT'S THE BIBLE. Guide books definitely have their purpose, but sometimes contain outdated information. You may end up spending hours tracking down a hotel that no longer exists. This only leads to frustration. Be adventurous. Find out about an area that interests you. Go there, and have a look around. You'll probably be able to find a place to stay on your own. If you have packed light, this won't be a problem for you. DON'T BE TOO ATTACHED TO YOUR POSSESSIONS. This attitude will help you pack light. You don't need all your appliances and all your shoes and all your shirts. You are traveling. You only need the necessities which are dictated by the type of trip you are taking. DON'T GET INVOLVED WITH QUESTIONABLE PEOPLE. They're easy to spot. They are your new best friend, the cabbie that's a little too helpful or a little too obnoxious, the fellow or lady with a sob story, the one who offers something that sounds too good to be true. Watch out for these folks. LIGHTEN UP. Don't expect everything to be the same as you have it at home. This expectation will only ruin your trip. Just go with the flow. You will have a much easier and more enjoyable time. Go with a light physical and mental load. |
